What should I look for in a gate?
Your gate should make a great first impression. It should convey a sense of welcome to visitors yet add an extra measure of privacy and security to the property without being oppressive in appearance.
The type of fence you decide to build will have a bearing on the choice of gate. Like fences, gates can take many shapes and sizes but they should be in harmony with the fence and they must be functional.
Here´s a short checklist of points to consider when planning a gate:
- Choose a style that complements the fence and maintains design and material continuity.
- Locate the gate for convenient entry as it relates to walkways, driveways and your general plan for landscaping.
- Decide upon the width. It should be wide enough to allow clear passage for garden equipment and landscaping equipment.
- Determine which side it should swing from. If the property slopes, the gate will need to swing downhill to avoid having to cut the bottom of the gate at an angle.
How do I make my gate safe?
Hinges, latches, and barrel bolts should be attached securely with corrosion-resistant fasteners. It is recommended that stainless steel thru bolts be used.
How tall can I have my fence?
Residential chain link is available in a variety of heights, although most municipalities put a limit on residential fences at 6 feet high, but each is different. It is best to contact your local planning/zoning office for exact limits.
What is the difference between split rail and post and rail fences?
Both fences offer a more rustic look to your property. Post and rail is a white cedar product. Both the posts and rails are round, the rails being 10´ long. Split rail fence consists of a locust post and an 11´ long hardwood rail. The posts and rails are rough cut and squarish in shape.
In what sizes does vinyl fence come?
Standard length for most styles of vinyl (PVC) fence is 6´ long. These fences are available in shorter lengths, but generally are not available in lengths over 6´. Most fences, except those with lattice or spoke decorative top panels, can be purchased in 3´, 3 1/2´, 4´, 5´, and 6´ heights.
Which fence is the most maintenance-free?
You can´t go wrong with vinyl fencing when it comes to being maintenance-free. Their beauty lasts for years with virtually no work to maintain them. Chain link fences are also maintenance-free.
